Ordered the old part # 3896962 "350 HP" rumpity-rump hydraulic camshaft from the dealership I was working at. Got lifters, double roller timing chain, Edelbrock Torker II intake, Holley 750 vacuum secondary four barrel carburetor, and long tube headers and a bunch of 2-1/2" pipe - straight sections right off the headers, and 45-degree bent sections out of the mufflers, exiting just ahead of the rear wheels. Ported and polished my first set of cylinder heads while everything was apart too. All back together, ran the cam break-in 30 minutes at about 2500rpm, dumped and changed the oil... and immediately, the silly solenoid-equipped GM starter said, "nope"... the heat from the headers had roasted the engagement solenoid... sooooo... I bypassed it and added a Ford solenoid up by the battery and ran fat cables... problem solved. Added a B&M shift kit, in kill mode, or "race" or whatever they call it, changed the filter, added new pan gasket, put the pan back on and topped it up with their suggested Type F transmission fluid...
Good gawd almighty, mister... It's alive! It's alive! The tires barking and about 5 feet of spinning going into second gear at 50-60mph, and solidly throwing you back in the seat shifting into third gear at 80-90mph was enough to keep a silly grin on my face about it to this day, lol!
Besides the thrill of it being a holy terror now, it got much better gas mileage too...
